Debrief of Starters 1 (PADS comp 28/5/05) by Natalie KirkwoodStarters Agility 1 (class 2) – Judge Steve Drinkwater Download the Full Course in CRD3 format (1kb AGL) There was an excellent opportunity to lead out to obstacle 4 or 5; many handlers opted for the safer bet and lead out to the tyre at 3. The course was fairly straightforward to the tunnel at 8. Dogs could take either entry, but it was optimal for them to take the left hand entry as this set up a better line to the next portion of the course. The dog had a change of direction between the hurdle at 9 and the Aframe at 10, therefore the front cross was best executed there, see figure 1. Some handlers were tempted to put the front cross in straight after the tunnel, however this pulled the dog away from the Aframe. Moving from 11 to 13, the dog had another change of direction as shown in figure 2. The front cross was best executed between the hurdle 12 and the weavepoles at 13. Some handlers attempted to do the front cross before 12 and wasted a lot more time. Alternatively, the handler may have elected to do the weavepoles with the dog on the right and then rear crossed the tunnel at 14. The final part of the course was best handled with the handler rear crossing the tunnel at 16. Then getting to in front of 18 to do a front cross to control the dog’s change of direction between 17 to 18. Some handlers performed a front cross before 17, which made it difficult to get the dog across to hurdle 18. Alternatively, handlers could have stayed on the dog’s left and then rear crossed hurdle 18, but there should have been plenty of time to get the front cross in that was previously mentioned.
