Handler Profile (February 2005) ~ Jody Brown

Where do you live? Heritage Park Brisbane.

Occupation: Self-Employed

Describe yourself in 25 words or less: Average every day sort of bloke who knocks around with his mates doing doggie stuff.  Barefoot at Nichols farm, on the beach at Burrum Heads.

Describe your agility vehicle: A van with windows that allows my Great Dane to stick his head out and slobber down the sides of my pristine white vehicle.

What drew you to the sport? I started playing Agility in 1978 when it was introduced at my local dog club. I had a cross-bred dog and travelled to NSW  to compete.

Dogs and their achievements: I have had all sorts of achievements doing dog sports, but my fondest dog memories are of the dogs that I would let of the chain at 4.00am.  We would trundle of to the paddocks to bring the cows up to the dairy for milking.

Where do you train? Brisbane Agility Dog Club (BAD) and at home.

What do you like about agility? I prefer to train than to compete. I just love watching dogs string a group of behaviours together.

What is your favourite ADAA event (Agility/Jumping/Gamblers, etc) and Why? My favourite event is pairs and so far I have run with Steve and Tommy and Wayne and Kelly and each time, I have had a ball.

What was the most important piece of advice that you have been given about agility? “Mouths are for breathing with” Natalie Kirkwood.

What was the most difficult training problem that you have overcome? I am not able to coordinate sequences as well as others so I spend a lot of time alone practising without my dog.  It seemed to take ages to learn how to do a front cross.

What is your most memorable moment in agility? My Great Dane going clear at ADCQ on a course that had the A frame twice (4 contacts) and three tunnels. The course was a Marion Allen special lots of fun and we achieved heaps that day.

What will your next dog be and when do you think you will get it? Got it, Maggot a working border collie.

What is your favourite training game and how do you play it? We actually don’t have a favourite game as Maggot is only 15months old and anything we do is play based.

What is your next goal in agility? We need some more equipment at club and I would like to have some of it made before our next comp in December.

Any other interesting information about you that you would like to share with the members: If I am stuck I will always ask others for help, and at times I have problems working out the most efficient way to get a gamble, or gaining sufficient points in snooker. I find people only to happy to tell me their strategies.
